Baseball Set to Take on Georgetown on Tuesday Afternoon

The Retrievers and Hoyas will meet for the 57th time

The UMBC baseball team visits Georgetown on Tuesday, March 1 in the Hoyas' home opener of the 2022 season. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field in Rockville, Md.
 
Retriever Update
 
  • UMBC (1-5) got its first victory of the season on Saturday, eeking out a 5-4 win over St. Joseph's. However, the Hawks responded with a doubleheader sweep of the Retrievers on Sunday.
 
  • Three Retrievers have gotten off to hot starts at the plate. Graduate student second baseman Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) lead the way with a .480 batting average. He has a pair of triples and blasted UMBC's first home run of the season versus St. Joseph's on Sunday.
   
  • Freshman hurler Evan Selmer (Beltsville, Md.) gave UMBC a huge boost in the win on Saturday, earning his first collegiate win in his debut. He tossed five innings of one-run baseball.  
 
A Look At The Hoyas
 
  • Georgetown comes into Tuesday's matchup with a 3-3 record, winning their last two in a three game series against Norfolk State.
     
  • Junior infielder Andrew Ciufo leads the Hoyas offense with a .391 (9-for-23) batting average, 9 RBIs, and 2 home runs.
 
  • The pitching staff has allowed 29 earned runs through six games with nine of those coming in a 9-1 loss to Wake Forest.
 
A Glance At The Series
 
  • The Retrievers lead the all-time series, 34-22, but the Hoyas have won 19 of the past 30 contests. 
 
  • The most recent match-ups came in 2019 which saw the Hoyas beat the Retrievers twice in May. 
 
  • UMBC will look to break a four-game losing streak as they head to the nation's capital on Tuesday. The Retrievers' last win occurred in May of 2017.
 
UMBC hosts Niagara in a four-game weekend series, beginning with a Friday single game at 3:00 p.m.
