Emmitsburg, Md.-- UMBC women's lacrosse battled back and forth with Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon, but a late Mountaineer goal gave them a 10-9 win.
Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) and
Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) each had three goals in the contest.
UMBC suffers their first loss of the season to move to 1-1 while The Mount improves to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) opened the scoring just four minutes in. She took the pass from Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) with the shot clock winding down to give UMBC an early lead.
- However the Mountaineers netted two straight to retake the lead.
- Both defenses would stand firm for most of the first half with neither team able to get any offense going.
- Claire Bockstie broke the scoring drought for the Retrievers with eight minutes left in the half to cut the deficit to two.
- However, it was the Mountaineers who would take a 4-2 lead into the locker room.
- Bockstie would help spark the Retriever offense in the third, getting a goal in transition off a save from Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) on the other end.
- Dymin Gerow would then hit her stride scoring three straight to give UMBC a 6-5 lead after three quarters. UMBC outscored MSM 4-1 in the quarter.
- Back and forth the two would continue to battle in the final period. The Mountaineers would get two goals to open the fourth, but Halczuk had the answer with a free position goal to tie it.
- After MSM took a 9-8 lead late, Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) made a slick move to the front of the net and tied the game with just over two minutes to go.
- However, the Mountaineers would throw the final punch, getting the go-ahead goal with under a minute to go to take a hard fought 10-9 contest.
NOTABLE:
- Bockstie extended her goal streak to 20 games. She has scored in every game of her UMBC career.
- Both Bockstie and Gerow led the way with three goals, with Halczuk, Docal and Weedon also finding the net.
- UMBC outshot the Mountaineers, 40-27.
- Roberts made eight saves in the loss.
UMBC will continue their road swing at American on Saturday, Feb. 19. The opening draw with the Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
