Bockstie, Gerow combine for 10 goals, while Fontana makes 15 saves for UMBC

Washington, D.C. – UMBC junior attack Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) and sophomore linemate Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) continued their blazing starts, combining for 10 goals as the Retrievers defeated American, 17-9, at Jacobs Recreational Complex.

UMBC improved to 2-1 on the young season, while AU fell to 0-2.

Making her first collegiate start, sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Fontana (Chevy Chase, Md.) excelled, making 15 saves and collecting her first career victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got on the board first, just 1:17 into the contest, but junior Jenna McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) converted a Bockstie pass to knot the score at 1-1 at the 12:14 mark of the first quarter.
  • Bocktie and Gerow scored in a 51-second span late in the quarter to give UMBC a 3-1 lead. The Retrievers led, 4-2, after 15 minutes.
  • AU would re-tie the score early in the second quarter, but a goal by senior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md.) started a 5-0 Retriever run.
  • The Retrievers led, 9-6, at halftime, however Bockstie scored twice in the first 2:30 of the third quarter.
  • American would trim their deficit to 12-9 early in the fourth, but the Retrievers finished the game on a 5-0 run.
McDermott and red-shirt freshman Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) added two goals apiece for UMBC. Sophomore defender Kennedy Evans (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) forced three turnovers.

The Retrievers host George Washington on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a noon face-off time slated.
