Energized Men's Basketball Knocks Down 18 Treys in 95-84 Win Over Stony Brook

Darnell Rogers (14p/13a) and Nathan Johnson (14p/11r) both recorded double-doubles

BALTIMORE – Playing for the fourth time in eight days, the UMBC men's basketball found plenty of energy and efficiency, as the Retrievers knocked off Stony Brook, 85-84, before a season-high 2,252 fans at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

The Retrievers (13-12, 8-6) buried a season-high 18 treys (on 30 attempts), just one shy of tying a school record, in winning their fourth straight home game.

Senior guard Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) converted a career-high six treys and scored 17 of his team-best 22 points in the second half.

Senior guard Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md.) and junior forward Nathan Johnson (Adel, Iowa) both recorded double-doubles. Rogers scored 14 points and dished out a career high 13 assists, while Johnson added 14 points and a career high 11 rebounds.

Rogers' 13 assist effort is tied for the fifth most in a single game in school history and is the first 1sist performance by a Retriever since 2011.

"Darnell was tremendous tonight, getting everybody shots and spreading it around," said Head Coach Jim Ferry. "Guys really shared the ball and played really well together."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams started quickly, as SBU hit five of its first seven attempts and senior guard L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School0 sparked UMBC with a pair of early treys. The Seawolves led, 11-10, at the 15:04 mark.
  • Owens buried another trey and fed Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapid, Mich.) for a back-door layup to give the hosts an 18-15 lead at the 11:20 mark.
  • Owens knocked down his fourth trey without a miss and Johnson converted a four-point play to propel the hosts to a 31-26 lead at the 7:23 mark
  • Matteo Picarelli (Milan, Italy) hit a corner trey to give UMBC a half-high eight point lead at 34-26, but a SBU run of 9-4 cut the gap to 38-35 at the under 4-minute media break
  • The Retrievers hit 9-of-15 shots from beyond the arc in the first half and Owens converted five-of-five for all of his 15 points.
  • Johnson added 11 points as UMBC took a 49-44 lead into halftime
  • Stony Brook's Anthony Roberts led all scorers with 17 at intermission. He ended the game with 23 points, behind teammate Tykei Greene's game high 29.
  • Kennedy buried a pair of early second half treys to get into double figures for the tenth consecutive game.
  • UMBC continued the onslaught from long range, hitting 4-of-5 to start the second half, but SBU hit a trey to stay within 68-61 at the 12:58 mark
  • The Seawolves extended their run to 11-2 and trimmed the deficit to 70-69 with 9:49 remaining
  • But a finish by Rogers in the paint and a Kennedy trey triggered a crucial 17-4 run to give the Retrievers a comfortable 87-73 margin with 5:32 remaining. Boonyasith capped the run with his third made trey of the game.
Owens finished 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and scored 15 points before fouling out with 3:10 remaining. Boonyasith was the fifth Retriever in double figures with 11 points.

Stony Brook had held UMBC to 51 points in the first meeting of the season, a 65-51 Seawolves' win.

UMBC moved back into second place in the conference and will face first-place Vermont in Burlington on Saturday.
