Durham, N.H. – Host New Hampshire (12-11, 7-6 America East) broke open a close game with a 17-4 run midway through the second half and went on to defeat UMBC, 68-62, at Lundholm Gym in an America East rescheduled game from January 2.
Senior guard
Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md.) led UMBC (12-12, 7-6) with 18 points and backcourt mate L. J. Owens (Annapolis, Md.) added 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats jumped out to a 27-15 lead at the midpoint of the first half and still led, 34-21, with 5:05 to play in the period.
- But the Retrievers closed the half on a 15-1 surge, sparked by a pair of treys by Rogers and one by senior guard Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) Rogers' three with 1:12 to play in the first half gave the visitors a 36-35 halftime lead.
- There were seven lead changes and two ties in the first 9:38 of the second half. UMBC senior guard Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) hit a jumper at that point to knot the game at 49-all.
- UNH then scored seven straight points to take control. They build the lead to 66-53 at the 3:55 mark of the period.
- The Retrievers would not quit, though, as a pair of paint jumpers by Rogers and a trey by Owens trimmed the deficit to 67-62 with 1:26 remaining.
- After a failed UNH possession, Rogers and Kennedy both had shots blocked with 40 and 38 seconds remaining and the Wildcats hit a free throw with 29 seconds left to finalize the scoring.
UMBC misfired on 10-of-12 shots from behind the arc in the second half, while UNH knocked down 6-of-13.
The Retrievers return home and will play for the fourth time in eight days when they host Stony Brook on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The game will be "90's Theme Night", so please welcome the Retrievers home in style.
