UMBC Men’s Basketball Takes Six-Game Win Streak to UMass Lowell on Saturday

UMBC men’s basketball will look to continue their winning way at UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon, having won their last six contests. Last time out, the Retrievers needed to come from behind to defeat Hartford on Wednesday, 68-64.

BALTIMORE– UMBC men's basketball will look to continue their winning way at UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon, having won their last six contests. Last time out, the Retrievers needed to come from behind to defeat Hartford on Wednesday, 68-64. UMBC trailed with under two minutes to go, but scored the last six points of the game for the win. L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) had a big steal and dunk to put UMBC in front for good.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • The Retrievers are in the midst of a six-game win streak and will start another three-game in five day stretch against the River Hawks. UMBC had a come from behind win against Hartford on Wednesday, scoring the last six points of the game.
  • Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) leads the team averaging 14.5 ppg and is shooting just under 50 percent from the floor. He is second on the team at 5.0 rpg.
  • Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) and Owens are also in double figures at 10.7 and 10.6 ppg respectively. Rogers is dishing out 3.7 apg.
  • Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) leads the team on the glass at 5.5 rpg, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor.

Scouting the River Hawks:
  • UMass Lowell comes into the contest at 12-11, 4-7 AE on the year after dropping a heartbreaking 87-85 contest at Stony Brook on Wednesday. Allin Blunt gave the River Hawks the lead with seven seconds left, but Stony Brook got an and one with one second left to take the win.
  • Blunt and Max Brooks lead the team on offense averaging 11.0 and 10.1 ppg respectively. Brooks is leading the team with 5.9 rpg and is shooting 62.8 percent from the floor. 
  • The River Hawks have five players averaging at least 9.0 ppg.

All-Time Series:
  • This will be the 18th all-time meeting, and second meeting this season with the River Hawks. UMass Lowell has won the last two games including the conference opener for the Retrievers back in January, 66-64. 
  • UMass Lowell leads the series 10-7, however, the Retrievers have won two of the last three games played in Lowell.

Among the Best:
  • UMBC sits T-19th nationally in team free throw percentage at 77.3 with Robert Morris, going 283-366 from the charity stripe this season.
  • The mark is good for first in the conference.

Milestone Watch:
  • L.J. Owens is approaching the 1,000 point mark, needing just 69 points to achieve the mark.
  • As a team, the Retrievers are on pace to have their best season from the foul line in program history. UMBC is currently at 77.3 percent from the charity stripe. The previous best was 75.5 percent in 1986-87.
