Men's Basketball Seek Second Straight Victory on Sunday Afternoon Against Central Connecticut State at "The Peake"

UMBC knocked down 8-of-13 shots from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes and outlasted a tough Lafayette squad, 71-63, in a Friday afternoon affair at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. Junior Matteo Picarelli led five Retrievers in double figures, recording career bests in points (19) and 3-point field goals (5). Picarelli was one of two UMBC reserves to amass double digits, as graduate student forward Jarvis Doles added 11 points. The Retrievers improved to 2-2 on the season, while the road-weary Leopards fell to 0-4.

Picarelli is shooting 53 percent from long-range as he's knocked down 10 of his first 19 attempts. He's second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg.) despite not starting a single game...Doles has also been a great spark of the bench as the forward is averaging 9.0 points in just 17.4 minutes per game...Lawrence has reached double-digits in scoring in all four contests and leads the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg...Boonyasith went over the 600-point mark for his career against Lafayette on Friday.

ANOTHER HOME OPENER "W"
UMBC handled Penn State York, 92-65, on Thursday evening and picked up their seventh straight season-opening home victory. Senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah scored a career high 19 points, leading four Retrievers (1-1) in double figures. Mensah also posted a game-high 10 rebounds to collect his first double-double as a Retriever. The Retrievers scored 52 second half points, hitting 22 of their first 33 shots from the floor in the period.  Senior guard Jacob Boonyasith scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while graduate students Jarvis Doles and Colton Lawrence added 13 apiece.

 ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Central Connecticut State is looking for their first win after dropping their first four contests. The Blue Devils lost to Lafayette, 55-50, on Saturday in a game played at UMBC. CCSU trailed by as many as 19 in the second half before cutting the deficit to five late before the Leopard were able to hold on for the win. Davonte Sweatman led the Blue Devils with 13 points. CCSU shot 17-of-51 (.333) from the field and 8-of-25 (.320) from three-point range. CCSU went 8-of-10 (.800) at the foul line. Kellen Amos is averaging a team-high 12.8 ppg. and is shooting 43 percent from the floor to pace CCSU. Scantlebury (11.8 ppg.) and Andre Snoddy (10.0 ppg.) are also averaging double-figure points.
 
SERIES HISTORY         
The Retrievers are 4-11 all-time vs. the Blue Devils. UMBC has dropped five straight in the series and are 1-9 in their last 10 against CCSU. CCSU defeated the Retrievers, 63-55, in their last matchup on December 10, 2014.  Wayne Sparrow paced the Retrievers with 17 points.
