Box Score

Video Highlights

Staten Island, N.Y.-- UMBC women's soccer got back to their winning ways with a 2-0 victory against Wagner on Thursday night. The win for the Retrievers improves their record to 3-2-2 on the year. Juliana Rafaniello (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) both scored just five minutes apart in the second half.

"Our ability to stay disciplined was the difference today. We trained better as a team, however, our complete focus now is preparing for a very good Maine team. Conference is a whole new ball game," head coach Vanessa Mann said after the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wagner had the first good chance of the match just five minutes in. However the attempt would sail high of the net.

  • Izzy Binko (Selbyville, Del.) had the first chance for the Retrievers in the 15th minute, but her shot was just off target.

  • Meghan McKye (Toronto, Ontario) nearly broke the scoreless tie just minutes later but her shot was saved.

  • The Retrievers controlled the run of play late in the first half, but it was the defense that stood tall all game.

  • The Seahawks had the best chance of the half as a shot trickled toward the goal line, but Alyssa Clearfield (Columbia, Md./Atholton) swept the ball away at the last second to keep it 0-0 at the half.

  • Rafaniello broke the scoreless draw in the 51st minute, taking a feed from Juretska for her fourth of the year and giving UMBC a 1-0 lead.

  • Koutsos would follow that just five minutes later, weaving through the defense and slotting home her third of the year to increase the advantage to 2-0.

  • That would be all the Retrievers needed as the defense kept the Seahawks at bay for a 2-0 win on Thursday.

NOTABLE:

  • UMBC outshot Wagner 16-7 with 10 shots on goal.

  • Binko, Koutsos, and McKye each had three shots in the contest.

  • Abbey Cowles (Colts Neck, N.J.) made just one save in the contest to pick up her first collegiate win.

The Retrievers will head to Orono to open America East play at Maine on Sunday, Sept. 19. Kick-off with the Black Bears is set for 12 p.m.
