BALTIMORE – In a thrilling contest before a record 2,800 fans at Retriever Soccer Park, the UMBC women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak with a 2-2 draw against the West Chester Golden Rams on Sunday afternoon.
UMBC (3-0-1) capitalized first, scoring just 2:06 into the match on a sensational free kick. Sophomore midfielder
Zoe Brossman drew a foul outside the box, setting up senior defender
Regan Rubin, who blasted the ball into the upper left corner from 25 yards out to give UMBC an early lead.
The Golden Rams responded just seven minutes later, leveling the score after a deep service from Lauren Reimold at the 40-yard line. Adriana Ryder collected the ball at the edge of the box, weaved past defenders, and slotted a low shot past UMBC goalkeeper
Amara Codd into the lower right corner.
West Chester seized a 2-1 lead as Abigail Hanemann pounced on a short cross from Ryder in the heart of the box, spun around, and fired the ball into the lower right corner.
But the Retrievers battled back, finding the equalizer with 24:33 left on the clock. Brossman coolly buried a penalty kick into the lower left corner after a sequence that started with senior defender
Reagan Casper's pinpoint pass from midfield.
Payton Foster then threaded the ball to Brossman, who was brought down in the box to set up the tying goal.
UMBC pressed for the winner in the final moments, with freshman forward
Brooke Clagett twice coming close after impressive runs into the box. Fellow freshman
Jorda James also narrowly missed, firing just wide after connecting with a superb cross from sophomore
Leen Jawhar with nine minutes to play.
The hosts held an 18-10 advantage in shots, including 11-4 in the final half.
The Retrievers will host St. John's on Thursday evening.
