BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner four minutes into overtime, as the Retrievers defeated Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in overtime in muggy conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.
UMBC improved to 3-2-1 on the season, while Mount slipped to 1-4-0.
"I thought it was one of our best games of the year overall," said head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. "We're all disappointed that they tied the game, late in the game. A great sign is though, in the overtime, we found a way to score a goal. We could have easily been down and disappointed and stopped playing, but we didn't."
Calheira opened the scoring in the 36' and the Retrievers held that advantage until the Mountaineers tied the score with 1:38 remaining in regulation. He tallied his third goal of the season and second game-winner in UMBC's final tune-up before America East Conference play kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 18.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMBC created numerous early chances as freshman Ismailcan Usta (Frankenburg, Germany) pushed a shot just wide in the 16' and put a hard one on goal in the 23'.
- Calheira broke the ice as junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) send him a long ball down the left side. Calheira gained possession, fought off a defender and beat Mount goalkeeper Ethan Russell from 12 yards out.
- Both teams created some excellent chances, but Russell (10 saves) and UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Jailon Gillespie (Laurel, Del.) (3 saves) were equal to the task.
- But Mount tied the score as Alek Wroblewski eluded several UMBC defenders and beat Gillespie to the far right post from 12 yards out on the left side.
- UMBC won a corner kick and Conze's arching left-footed service from the right corner eluded the Mount defense and Calheira chested it in from the left post.
NOTES AND STATS
- Calheira's two-goal game was UMBC's second of the season. Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored twice in the 4-3 loss at Maryland.
- Conze now has four assists on the season and eight total points.
- UMBC is 2-0-1 in overtime this season.
- UMBC fired off a season-high 24 shots, outshooting the visitors, 24-8.
The Retrievers open league play versus Hartford on Saturday. Kick-off time at Retriever Soccer Park is set for 7:00 p.m.
