Box Score Video Highlights | Postgame Interview
BALTIMORE – UMBC grabbed a lead with 20 minutes remaining, but visiting Navy equalized with 2:55 remaining and the two teams opened the 2021 campaign with a 2-2 double overtime draw in sweltering conditions at Retriever Soccer Park.
Navy's Sidney Paris opened the scoring, converting an indirect kick from inside the box in the 28th minute. But, just 1:32 later, UMBC junior back Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) scored on a penalty kick and the game went to halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
UMBC took a 2-1 lead in the 70', when senior forward Justin John-Langba (Bowie, Md.) tapped in a loose ball from close range. But, with the clock winding down, Navy drew a penalty kick opportunity and David Jackson scored to even the contest at 2-2.
"I thought our guys had a gutty performance," said Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. "Navy was very good… we had the opportunity to win the game and that was disappointing… but we have a very young team and need to learn how to win."
The Retrievers make the short trip south down I-95 to take on the Maryland Terrapins on Sun., Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
