Video Highlights

BALTIMORE - On Senior Day, the UMBC women's lacrosse team saw records fall and a ticket punched to the #AEWLAX Tournament with a 27-16 victory over Binghamton.

UMBC moves to 6-4 overall on the season and 5-3 in America East play; this is the most conference wins for UMBC under head coach Amy Slade and the most since the 2006 season when the Retrievers finished 5-1. Binghamton sits at 3-4 on the year and in conference contests.

The 43 goals scored between the two teams was the most in a game, breaking the previous record of 39 set back in 2017 (UMBC 23, Vermont 16). UMBC's output of 27 set the America East record for most goals in a single game, resetting the conference record of 24.

Sophomore Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) set the UMBC record for most draw controls in a game with 14, dethroning Caitlin Miller's record of 12 set back in 2015. Halczuk now has 84 draws on the season and is three away from tying the all-time single-season record set by Miller back in 2018.

The Retrievers started the game with a six-goal run, with sophomore Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md.) collecting an early hat trick. Freshman Dymin Gerow netted two, while classmate Lillian Begley (Gaithersburg, Md./Mother of Divine Grace)

The Bearcats scored back-to-back goals to make the score 6-2 with 19:16 to play before Bockstie and Halczuk extended the lead back to six. With 18:00 on the clock, Halczuk found Bockstie in front of the net, where the sophomore behind-the-back passed it into the net; Halczuk later added her only goal of the game at the 16:52 mark on the clock.

Binghamton then used a 4-1 run to close the game to 9-6 with 10:39 remaining in the first half, with Bockstie being the lone Retriever scorer. But, Gerow and senior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) each put up goals on player-up opportunities to extend UMBC's lead back to five, 11-6, with 9:11 to play.

The Bearcats added two more goals, surrounding a Katie Schluederberg-to-Lily Kennedy score at the 5:16 mark, but the Retrievers closed out the first half on a four-goal run, including two from Docal, marking her 50th of her career, to give the Retrievers a 16-8 lead heading into halftime.

Binghamton scored first in the second half but another three-goal spurt from Kennedy off a pass from Halczuk and two free position goals from Gerow and freshman Kennedy Evans (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) gave UMBC a 10-goal lead, 19-9, with 25:35 to play in the game.

The Bearcats scored three goals, interrupted only by a score from junior Megan Cleverly (Middletown, Md./Middletown) to cut the deficit to eight, 20-12, with 19:07 on the clock.

UMBC used two goals from Docal and a score from Gerow to push the lead back to 11, 23-12, but Binghamton answered right back with three of their own to even it back to eight.

With 9:09 remaining in the game, Cleverly began a four-goal run for UMBC with a free position shot, followed by a Bockstie's seventh goal of a day, a player-up FPS from Gerow, and a Kennedy score off the assist from sophomore Jenna McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) to give UMBC the 27-15 lead.

Binghamton scored the final goal of the game with 1:43 left to play for the 27-16 final.

10 Retrievers recorded a point in the victory, highlighted by a career 10-point performance by Gerow (7g, 3a). The freshman, who is currently 14th in the country in free position goals per game (1.12) and 8th in free position percentage (.750) was a perfect 5-5 from the eight-meter mark, while also adding 10 draw controls.

In addition to her six-point performance (1g, 5a) and 14 draws, Halczuk also picked up three ground balls and caused a team-high four turnovers. Bockstie netted a career-high seven goals, while Docal also put up a career-best five on the afternoon.

For Binghamton, Madison Murphy recorded a six-point day (5g, 1a).

In goal, senior Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston/Army West Point) made eight saves in the victory. Freshman Isabella Fontana (Chevy Chase, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) also made an appearance for the Retrievers.

UMBC will close out the 2021 regular season on the road on Saturday, May 1 as they travel to Stony Brook to take on the Seawolves. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
