BURLINGTON, Vermont - Freshman Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) put up a career-high five goals on Saturday afternoon, including the game-winner to help UMBC defeat the Vermont Catamounts, 11-8, at Virtue Field.
UMBC moves to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in America East play, while the Catamounts fall to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in conference contests.
The Retrievers held a 7-4 lead at halftime, but the Catamounts netted the first goal in the second half to cut the lead to just two.
UMBC put up three goals in the span of three minutes to extend its lead back to five. Senior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) had a hand in all three of the scoring, scoring two of them and assisting on Gerow's goal at the 19:13 mark.
Vermont, however, used its own three-goal spurt to cut the lead down to two, 10-8, with just 2:07 to play in the second half. However, Gerow controlled the ensuing draw and found the back of the net with just 50 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Retrievers.
Just as she ended the day, Gerow started the game off with a goal for the Retrievers before sophomore Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) scored to put UMBC up, 2-0.
The Catamounts answered with a goal before Gerow added her second of the day to give UMBC a 3-1 lead at the 20:43 mark in the first half. Vermont responded to cut the lead to two, but Halczuk and Gerow extended the UMBC lead by three, 5-2, with 13:39 to play.
The Catamounts once again came back to cut the Retriever lead down to two with under 11 to play but junior Megan Cleverly (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) put UMBC back ahead, 7-3, before Vermont scored at 4:24 mark.
Gerow's five goals led all scorers, followed by Docal's three points (2g, 1a). On the draw, Halzuk and freshman Kennedy Evans (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) each brought down six for the afternoon; Halczuk is now 17 draw controls away from tying Caitlin Miller's record for most draw controls in a season with 87.
Evans was also forceful on the defensive side for the Retrievers, causing a team-high four turnovers and picking up three ground balls.
In goal, senior Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md/Fallston/Army West Point) made nine saves and picked up three ground balls.
The Retrievers will return to UMBC Stadium for the final time in 2021 as they host Binghamton for the second time this season. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its seven graduating members: Courtney Renehan, Lily Kennedy, Rachel Walchuck, Lexi Roberts, Olivia Docal, Katie Schluederberg, and Cassie Evans.
