Men's Lacrosse Leads All the Way in 13-10 Triumph at Hartford

Box Score

Video Highlights

West Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) scored a career-best five times as visiting UMBC led from start to finish and defeated Hartford, 13-10, at Al-Marzook Field.

The Retrievers won for the seventh consecutive time dating back to the truncated 2020 season and improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in America East play. UH dropped to 0-3.

Due to a pause in team activities due to COVID-19, UMBC had not played since a thrilling 13-12 four-overtime victory over Stony Brook on March 6. Several key contributors did not travel to Hartford and face-off specialist Alex Poma left the game due to injury in the second quarter.

"It was a great team effort," said head coach Ryan Moran. "This past week was certainly a unique one from an availability and preparation standpoint, but I was proud of the team's resilience during the week, our first America East travel as a team since 2019 and especially during the game when things didn't go our way at times.

"We had to shake up the lineup due to injuries and COVID protocols and we just kept a next man-up mindset. We're very happy to get a conference road win against an opponent we have a lot of respect for."

Junior Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (2g, 1a) and sophomores Mike Doughty (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) (1g, 2a) and Dane Hall (Harwood, Md./St. John's College) (1g, 2a) chipped in with three points apiece. Junior attackman Brett Baucia (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) matched his career best with two goals and senior Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) also added a pair of tallies.

The Retrievers built the lead to 13-6 on goals by Baucia and Zichelli with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Hawks won five of the game's final six face-offs and cut the deficit to 13-10 over the next five minutes. Hartford had three opportunities to cut the gap to two goals, but a save by goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) with 3:50 remaining and a caused turnover by sophomore Mason Edwards (Alexandria, Va.) in the final 70 seconds preserved the three-goal margin.

Lingner made nine of his ten saves in the final 30 minutes, as Hartford outshot an efficient UMBC squad, 37-30.

Patschorke opened the scoring with an unassisted tally just 61 seconds into the game, then fed Baucia 50 seconds later to give UMBC a quick 2-0 lead.

The Retrievers led, 5-3, after 15 minutes, but Hartford struck 61 seconds into the second quarter to trim the gap to 5-4. However, Dupuis scored three second quarter goals as part of a 5-0 Retriever run which extended the lead to 10-4 before a late Hawk goal finalized the halftime score at 10-5.

Dupuis added his fifth goal and team-best ninth of the season early in the third quarter as the pace slowed and the Retrievers took an 11-5 advantage into the final stanza.

Edwards, the short-stick defensive midfielder who scored the game-winning overtime goal versus Mount St. Mary's, excelled versus the Hawks, leading the way with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Dupuis scored his five goals on just seven shots.

The 3-0 start is UMBC's first since 2001 and the seven-game winning streak is the Retrievers' longest since a school-record 11-game streak in 2008.

UMBC will now make-up the March 13 game at BInghamton this Wednesday, March 24 (4:00 p.m.), then return home to face the same Bearcat team four days later at UMBC Stadium.
