Fairfax, Va.-- UMBC baseball trailed 6-1 after two innings, but scored the next 14 runs to take the lead, including nine in the eighth inning. The Retrievers held off a late rally to win their fourth in a row, 14-10 on Friday afternoon against the Patriots.
UMBC improves to 4-0 on the year, while the Patriots fall to 1-4.
The Patriots got things started early, tagging starter Owen Hamilton (San Anselmo, Calif.) for five runs in the first. The Retrievers would battle back, getting a sacrifice fly from Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) that scored Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) to make it 5-1. However, the Patriots got that run back to take a 6-1 lead after two.
From there, it was all Retrievers. UMBC added a pair in the third on sacrifice flies from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) to make it 6-3. Brown added another run on a solo home run to dead center and made it a one-run game in the fifth with Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) scoring on a throwing error.
UMBC continued the comeback, putting up nine runs in the eighth to take the lead. Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) doubled in Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) to tie it, and Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) gave UMBC their first lead with his two-RBI single to make it 8-6. The inning would continue with a Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) RBI single, Torres RBI walk, and a balk to make it 11-6. Schwartz joined the party with a two-RBI single and would later score on an Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) single to cap a nine-run inning that made it 14-6 Retrievers.
George Mason would cut into the deficit, but the Retrievers held on for a 14-10 win on Friday afternoon.
Cameron Taylor (Leesburg, Va.) picked up his first win of the season hurling 3.0 innings of relief. Taylor gave up just five hits, three earned runs with two strikeouts.
Belanger provided the go-ahead RBIs in his only hit of the game. Roberts led the way with three hits with Torres, Belanger, Schwartz, and Brown each driving in two runs.
UMBC continues their weekend at home with a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The first pitch for game one is set for 1:30 p.m. on America East TV.
