BALTIMORE – UMBC freshman forward Taylor Calheira (Towson, Md./Concordia Prep) struck in the 106' as the host Retrievers opened the 2020-21 campaign with a 1-0 double overtime victory over George Washington (1-1-0) on the turf at UMBC Stadium.
The victory was the 300th in the UMBC tenure of Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. The Retriever mentor began his 30th season at the helm and improved his overall mark to 300-186-75, a winning percentage of better than 60 percent.
"I've been blessed with a lot of great players since I've been at UMBC and I'm thankful to all of those guys," said Caringi.
UMBC junior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) set a new career high with nine saves and recorded his eighth career shutout.
The Retrievers' America East opener versus NJIT, set for this Friday, Feb. 28, has been postponed. The Highlanders have paused all team-related activities due to COVID-related protocols. UMBC's next game is slated to occur on Friday, March 5 at Stony Brook.
The Game Winner
- Freshman Jago Lott (Somerset, U.K.) took a corner from the left side and GW netminder Justin Grady punched the ball out of the goal month area. Calheira took one touch and knocked the ball beyond the onrushing netminder from 14 yards out.
By the Numbers
- UMBC outshot GW, 11-10 through 90 minutes, but the Colonials attempted the first four shots of the extra period. Calheira's goal was UMBC's lone shot of extra time.
- Calheira and fellow freshman Spencer Hanks led UMBC with three shots apiece.
- Calheira's goal was the first allowed by GW this season. They shutout Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, in overtime in their opener on Saturday.
- UMBC is now 9-0-1 in their last ten matches vs. GW and 14-4-3 all-time.
- UMBC is 11-1-3 in its last 15 season openers.
