UMBC Hits NCAA Season-Best 69.6 Percent From Long Range in 98-67 Win Over American

The UMBC Retrievers (3-2) buried 16-of-23 shots from behind the arc and 26-of-55 overall in a sterling 98-67 victory over American at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Tuesday evening.

BALTIMORE-- The UMBC Retrievers (3-2) buried 16-of-23 shots from behind the arc and 26-of-55 overall in a sterling 98-67 victory over American at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Tuesday evening. It was the first win for the Retrievers against American since the 2009-10 season and the first home win in the series since 1987-88.

The 69.6 percent efficiency from long distance is the best in an NCAA Division I game this season.

Eight different Retrievers hit from long range, led by senior wing Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.), who buried 4-of-5 in a career-best 21 point effort.

UMBC's 98 points scored was the most against a Division I foe since amassing 108 versus UMass Lowell in February of 2017.

"Twenty assists is what's special," said head coach Jim Ferry of his team's offensive output. "It's early basketball, with a new coach and new players, guys in different roles and it's a process. We have to stay focused on getting better every day and being consistent."

Senior guard Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) sparked UMBC with 12 first half points, hitting five-of-six shots from the floor and both shots from behind the arc. The former Eagle ended up with a UMBC career best 14 points.

"I was trying to be aggressive," said Boonyasith. "I saw some gaps to attack and I just went for it."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMBC trailed early, 7-4, but a Boonyasith trey at the 18:19 mark started a 13-3 run which gave the hosts the lead for good at 17-10 at the 13:11 mark.
  • Senior guard Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md.) hit a trey with 23 seconds to play in the half to extend the margin to 45-31 at the break.
  • The Eagles could only get within 13 points early in the second half. UMBC senior guard Ray Salnave (Elmont, N.Y.) scored all ten of his points in the second half and his treys extended UMBC's lead to 65-46 at the 11:52 mark and 75-53 with 7:52 remaining.
  • UMBC converted seven consecutive treys in the second half and finished 10-of-13 over the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Rogers contributed 10 points and seven assists.

UMBC dished out 20 assists and outrebounded AU, 32-23.

Johnny O'Neil led the Eagles with 15 points. American (2-4) shot 45.2 percent from the floor, but just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from long range.

UMBC travels to Pitt to play the ACC's Panthers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
