Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UPSET CITY: Men’s Basketball Upsets ACC foe Pitt on Saturday, 87-77

UMBC men’s basketball knocked off ACC foe Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon, 87-77.

Pittsburgh, Pa.-- UMBC men's basketball (4-2) knocked off ACC foe Pittsburgh (2-4) on Saturday afternoon, 87-77. The win against Pitt was the first regular season power five win since the Retrievers beat Nebraska in 2008, and it is the second straight win against an ACC opponent in as many games.

"I'm really proud of our guys. They really bought into the game plan. We knew it would be a battle, but to beat an ACC team on the road is a great accomplishment for UMBC and I'm really proud of these guys," head coach Jim Ferry said after the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Pitt jumped out to an early 10-5 lead, but the Retrievers found their rhythm. Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) drilled a transition three to cut the deficit to two.
  • UMBC put together a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game after a Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) three and one. Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) would make it 11-0 after a driving layup.
  • After the Panthers hit a three to quell the run, Szymon Wojcik (Wroclaw, Poland) hit back-to-back three's to give UMBC a 12 point advantage.
  • That sparked a 20-3 run over 3:40 to give UMBC their largest lead to that point at 33-21.
  • UMBC used another 8-0 run off Ray Salnave (Elmont, N.Y.) and Kennedy triples to push the lead to 15.
  • The Retrievers would end the half up 55-44, hitting five of their last seven. UMBC shot 59 percent from the floor and 65 percent from three in the half.
  • Kennedy led the way with 12 points with L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) adding 10 points.
  • The Panthers opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the Retriever lead to single digits. That extended to an 11-1 run with under 14 minutes to go.
  • Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) hit a jumper just seconds later to end the run.
  • Kennedy once again struck with five of his 19 points sparking a 9-0 run to push the lead back to double digits.
  • Pitt once again cut the deficit to single digits, but the Retrievers battled the whole way.
  • UMBC held off the Panthers late taking an 87-77 win on Saturday.
NOTABLE:
  • The win was the second straight for the Retrievers against ACC competition, defeating Virginia in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
  • It is also the first regular season win against a power five school since 2008 when the Retrievers knocked off Nebraska.
  • Kennedy led the way with 19 points going 7-10 from the floor and 4-4 from three.
  • L.J. Owens and Szymon Wojcik each had season-bests with 18 and 13 points respectively.
  • Rogers chipped in 10 points with eight assists. The Retrievers shot 48 percent from the floor, scoring 17 points off turnovers.

The Retrievers return to Baltimore on Wednesday, December 1 to take on Columbia. Tip-off at The Peake is set for 7 p.m. on Watch ESPN.
