Rogers Ties Career High, Men's Basketball Races Past Western Carolina 91-75

UMBC (2-1) outscored Western Carolina (2-2), 44-29, in the second half and defeated the Catamounts, 91-75 in Friday’s nightcap of the Jerome Kersey Classic at Longwood University’s Willett Hall.

Farmville, Va. – UMBC (2-1) outscored Western Carolina (2-2), 44-29, in the second half and defeated the Catamounts, 91-75 in Friday's nightcap of the Jerome Kersey Classic at Longwood University's Willett Hall.

Senior guard Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md.) tied his career high with 23 points. He added six assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Classmate Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) added 15 points, while junior post Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ont.) hit six-of-seven shots in a 13-point effort.


The Retrievers shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the floor, 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line.


UMBC will face Longwood (3-1), a forty-point winner (82-42) over American in the opening game of the day, in a 5:00 p.m. contest on Saturday.


HOW IT HAPPENED  
  • The teams shared the lead nearly equally in the first half with both squads hitting over 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
  • After WCU took an eight-point lead, the Retrievers closed the half on a 10-1 run, capped by a Szymon Wojcik (Wroclaw, Poland) trey with four seconds to play and took a 47-46 lead at the break.
  • With the scored knotted at 49 early in the second half, a traditional three-point play by Kennedy, followed by a long trey from Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) gave UMBC the lead for good at 55-49 with 17:42 remaining in the second half.
  • UMBC took a 12-point lead at 74-62 on another Boonyasith trey with 9:14 to play in the second half.
  • The Retrievers held Longwood to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, including just 2-of-13 from behind the arc.
  • The 91 points was the most for the Retrievers since a 92-81 win over GW on Dec. 7, 2020.
