Ferry Gets First UMBC Victory in 85-47 Win Against Penn State York

UMBC used a monster 24-0 run over the last 9:09 of the contest to pull away with an 85-47 win against Penn State York on Monday night.

BALTIMORE-- UMBC used a monster 24-0 run over the last 9:09 of the contest to pull away with an 85-47 win against Penn State York on Monday night. Head coach Jim Ferry picked up his first win as UMBC head coach as three Retrievers hit double figures, led by Keondre Kennedy with 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Penn State York came out shooting well early on, holding a lead for a three minute stretch midway through the first half.
  • Nathan Johnson (Adel, Iowa) helped spark a 14-0 run that put UMBC back in front with a putback. 
  • Another 11-0 spurt for the Retriever gave them their largest lead of the half at 12 after Dimitrije Spasojevic (Vrsac, Serbia) hit a tough lay-in.
  • UMBC would hold the Nittany Lions scoreless over the last 2:06 of the half to take a 38-29 lead into halftime.
  • Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) led the way with eight first-half points. Ray Salnave (Elmont, N.Y.) added seven as UMBC shot 40 percent and had 22 points in the paint.
  • UMBC found their footing early in the second half.
  • Rogers drilled a three that was followed by a Kennedy coast-to-coast layup that forced a timeout up 47-36. 
  • The Retrievers would put the pedal down over the last 9:09 of the contest, holding Penn State York scoreless as part of a 24-0 run to take an 85-47 win on Monday.

NOTABLE:
  • Kennedy led the way with 17 points on 7-10 shooting. Rogers added 16 points and three assists with Salnave chipping in 12.
  • Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich.) had a career-high 10 rebounds. A game after he tied his career-high with nine against UMass.
  • UMBC outrebounded Penn State York, 52-38 and had 46 points in the paint.

The Retrievers will hit the road for a pair of games in the Jerome Kersey Classic, hosted by Longwood on Friday and Saturday. UMBC will play Western Carolina on Friday at 7:30 p..m. before taking on host Longwood on Saturday at 5 p.m.
