Retriever Bats Come Alive in 10-5 Win Against Penn State on Saturday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball found their groove on Saturday, belting 15 hits in a 10-5 win against power five foe Penn State. Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) had three doubles, driving in two runs in the win.

The Retrievers snap a four-game losing streak to improve to 2-9 while the Nittany Lions fall to 9-4, losing their second straight.

Penn State started things off with a run in the first, but the Retrievers quickly answered with a two-spot in their half. Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) singled with one out and advanced on a pair of walks that loaded the bases. Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) stepped up and drove in Charlton and Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) to give the Retrievers the lead.

The Nittany Lions would answer with three in the third to give them a 4-2 lead. The Retrievers got on back in their half on a Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) RBI single that scored Brown. After that, UMBC would score the next six runs to take a 9-4 lead.

Brown doubled home Charlton in the fourth, Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) drove in Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) in the fifth, and Torres doubled home Floyd in the sixth. Cilio scored on a throwing error in the seventh to make it 7-4 before O'Saben singled in Wilkinson and Charlton's sac fly scoring O'Saben to make it 9-4 through seven.

Penn State got a run on an RBI double in the eighth, but Brown doubled home Torres to make it 10-5. Cooper Adams (Potomac, Md./St. John's College) shut the door in the ninth with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to give UMBC a 10-5 win.

Brown had three hits and two doubles with Cilio and Wilkinson also collecting three hits. Brown, Casey and O'Saben all drove in two runs.

Joe Nestel (Drexel Hill, Pa.) picked up his first win of the season going 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. UMBC gave up just six hits on the day.

UMBC will close out the weekend at Navy tomorrow with the first pitch at 4 p.m.
