Offense Explodes and Sargent Tosses Complete Game Shutout as Baseball Defeats UMass Lowell

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Baseball team blasted three-homers in a seven-run first inning, and Eddie Sargent tossed the first complete game shutout of his career as the Retrievers defeated visiting UMass Lowell 13-0 (7) on Friday night.

Danny Orr, Ehi Okojie and Brooks Henderson all homered in the big first inning, that saw all seven runs score with two outs.

In the first, after the first two batters got out, Orr blasted a solo homer. Danny Wyatt then singled, followed by Okojie smashing the first pitch he saw well over the center field fence to make it 3-0. Derek Paris worked a full count walk, Kyle Eddington singled and Anthony Mascuilli also drew a full count walk. Henderson then hit a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center for a grand slam, his first homer as a Retriever, to make it 7-0.

Sargent allowed base runners in each of the next few innings, but the Retrievers turned double plays in three straight innings to keep the River Hawks off the board going into the bottom of the fourth, where UMBC would add to its lead. Wyatt drove in Dylan Melton with a single to give the Dawgs an 8-0 lead, and Okojie then greeted a new pitcher with a two-run double. Paris followed with an RBI double of his own to extend the lead to 11-0. Wyatt then provided the final runs of the game with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth.

Orr and Wyatt each had three-hit games, while Henderson, Okojie and Paris each had two hits as well. Jesiah Carpenter also added a double out of the leadoff spot for UMBC.

Sargent allowed six hits, struck out and walked two in his dominant outing.

Game two of the series will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
