Box Score Lowell, Mass.-- Down by as many as eight with 5:22 left, UMBC fought back for a big 60-50 win against the River Hawks on Saturday. Sophomore L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) drilled the go-ahead three, part of a 15-0 run over the last 5:22 for the win. K.J. Jackson (Missouri City, Texas) led a quartet of Retrievers in double figures with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
The Retrievers win their second straight to improve to 11-14, 4-6 AE while the River Hawks fall to 9-16, 3-7 AE on the year.
Jackson led a quartet of Retrievers in double figures with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) added 11 and seven boards with Owens and R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) chipping in 10 points.
Obadiah Noel led the River Hawks with a game-high 24 points.
UMass Lowell would come out in the second half and hold the Retrievers scoreless over a four-minute stretch to regain control of the lead. That would extend to an 8-0 run over five minutes until Eytle-Rock hit a reverse layup in transition to end the drought.
UMBC would go on an 8-0 run of their own, capped by a Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) three to tie it midway through the half. However, the River Hawks would respond with an 8-0 spurt of their own to regain an eight point lead.
The Retrievers would not waver, battling back and getting a big corner three from Owens to take their first lead since the opening minute of the game with 2:55 left. Jackson would add to the lead with a stepback jumper at the end of the shot clock, and the game was capped with an Owens dunk late.
The Retrievers would end the game on a 15-0 run over the final 5:22 to come away with a big 60-50 win on Saturday.
UMBC held a potent River Hawks offense to just 50 points after averaging 75 ppg this year and just 22 percent shooting in the second half. The Retrievers shot 43 percent from the floor and 31 percent from three in the win.
The River Hawks jumped out to an early lead thanks in part to an 8-0 run after Brandon Horvath scored on the game's first possession. Horvath would end that spurt with a runner to cut the deficit in half.
That would wake up the Retriever offense as L.J. Owens and Ricky Council II (Durham, N.C.) both drilled triples to keep the Retrievers just one point down. UMass Lowell would answer using a 6-0 run to take a six point lead, their largest of the half. K.J. Jackson would ignite a 4-0 run at the end of the half with a layup and then forcing a steal that led to an R.J. Eytle-Rock bucket to make it 27-25 at halftime.
Jackson ended the half going 3-4 from the floor and led the way with nine first-half points. Horvath added six with Council II chipping in five. UMBC shot 46 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
