Box Score DeLand, Fla.-- UMBC baseball went back and forth with Stetson, getting a big two-run home run from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) in the eighth to tie it up and force extras. However, the Hatters got the winning RBI single in the 12th to pick up the win on Saturday.
UMBC falls to 1-6 on the year while the Hatters improve to 7-2.
The Retrievers got things going early with Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) singling to lead off the game. That was followed by a Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) single and Torres hit by pitch to load the bases. Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) brought O'Saben home on a sac fly to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. Ryan Cole (Endwell, N.Y.) brought home Floyd on an RBI single to make it 2-0 UMBC after one.
Stetson would answer with a four-run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. That lead would be shortlived as the Retrievers would answer the next half inning with RBI singles from Floyd and Torres that scored Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) and O'Saben to tie it up. The Hatters however would put up three in their half of the sixth to take a 7-4 advantage.
UMBC would not quit, getting a solo home run from Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) in the seventh and a two-run shot from Torres in the eighth to force extra innings. The Retrievers would threaten in both the 11th and 12th, but could not get a run across. The Hatters would get the winning run on a two-out RBI single in the 12th to take game two 8-7.
Every Retriever who had a hit had multiple, led by Floyd with three. Torres drove in three of the seven runs.
The series finale will take place tomorrow, Sunday, March 1 with first pitch at 1 p.m.
