Box Score DeLand, Fla.-- UMBC baseball put up eight runs in the second inning en route to their first win of the year, 9-8 on Friday at Stetson. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) had four hits in the game, driving in two with two stolen bases in the win.
UMBC improves to 1-5 on the year while the Hatters fall to 6-2.
Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) got the second started with a double to left center and would score on the very next pitch on a Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) double. Ryan Cole (Endwell, N.Y.) would bring Casey around on a single to right to make it 2-0 before Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) doubled to put runners on the corners. O'Saben then dove in his first run with a single with Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) drilling a two-run single to make it 5-0 in favor of the Retrievers.
The Retrievers would not stop there, as a double steal allowed O'Saben to score from third. Torres would then hit his second double of the inning to score Floyd with an RBI groundout from Casey giving UMBC an 8-0 lead.
UMBC would add another in the third on an RBI single from O'Saben that plated Cole to make it 9-0 early.
Stetson would not surrender, cutting the deficit to 9-4 after four runs in the fifth, and would eventually get it to 9-8 heading to the ninth. However, Cooper Adams (Potomac, Md./St. John's College) would retire the Hatters in order to preserve a 9-8 win for the Retrievers.
Blake James (Clarksville, Md./Atholton/Harford CC) picked up the win hurling 1.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Adams earned the save with 2.0 innings of work, surrendering just one run.
O'Saben had four hits and two RBI with two stolen bases to lead the Retrievers. Torres, Casey and Cole all had two hits with Floyd and Casey each driving in two runs.
The Retrievers can win the series tomorrow with game two starting at 4:30 p.m.
