Box Score Arlington, Va.-- UMBC baseball battled throughout, but could not complete the comeback, falling 4-2 to George Washington on Tuesday afternoon. Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) drove in both runs with an RBI single and sacrifice fly in the contest.
UMBC falls to 0-5 to open the year, while the Colonials improve to 5-2.
After the Colonials put up runs in the first and third innings, UMBC answered back with a run of their own in the fourth. Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) singled with one out and advanced on a flyout and throwing error all the way to third. Colin Casey then stepped up and laced a single to center to score Floyd, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
George Washington would threaten in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Dustin Gosnell (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake/Anne Arundel CC) got a strikeout to end the threat and keep the deficit 2-1.
The Colonials would add a pair in their half of the eighth to take a 4-1 lead into the ninth. In the ninth, UMBC would mount a comeback. Floyd started the inning with a double before Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) ripped a single to put runners on the corners. Casey then brought Floyd home with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 with one out.
However, the Colonials would get the next two batters to hold on for the 4-2 win.
Casey drove in both runs with Floyd recording two of the team's six hits and scoring both runs. Gabe Delgado (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) picked up the loss, hurling 5.0 innings and giving up two runs with two strikeouts.
