Box Score Charlotte, N.C.-- The Retrievers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the second inning, but the 49ers would score four straight to take a 5-2 lead and never look back in an 11-6 win over UMBC in the series finale on Sunday. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) drove in two of the six runs in the contest.
UMBC falls to 0-4 to open the year while the 49ers improve to 5-3.
After Charlotte opened with a run in the first, the Retrievers answered with a pair the next half inning to take a 2-1 lead. Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) led off the inning with a double and would score on a two-out Reese Varley (Haymarket, Va.) single up the middle. O'Saben brought in Varley with his two-out single to center to make it 2-1.
However, Charlotte would score the four runs in the second and third innings to retake a 5-2 lead. UMBC would get a run back in the fourth with O'Saben driving in Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) with an RBI groundout. The 49ers would respond in their half of the inning with three runs to extend their lead.
The Retrievers would get a run in the fifth on a Casey RBI fielder's choice that scored Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and two in the seventh on an RBI triple from Torres and Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) sacrifice fly, but it would not be enough as Charlotte held on 11-6 for the series sweep.
Torres and Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) each had two hits in the contest with O'Saben driving in two runs. Torres, Brown, Casey and Varley also drove in runs in the loss.
UMBC returns to the diamond on Tuesday, Feb. 26 when they head to Arlington to take on George Washington. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
