Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C.-- UMBC baseball fell in both games of their doubleheader with the 49ers on Saturday, 6-1 and 4-0. The Retrievers were held to just six hits throughout both games, as they fall to 0-3 on the year. Charlotte improves to 4-3 after the two wins.
Game One:
Charlotte got things going with a two-run home run in the third to take an early lead. The Retrievers were held without a hit until the fifth inning but managed to cut into the deficit in the inning.
Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) led off the inning with a single and got to third after Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) reached on t at throwing error and advancing to second. Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) brought Casey in with the bases loaded on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.
However, the 49ers would limit the Retrievers to just two more hits the rest of the way, scoring four more runs to take the opener 6-1.
Casey, Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), and Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md.St. James/Charleston Southern) each had a hit in the contest with Wilkinson getting an RBI.
Kieran Garner (Clarksville, Md./River Hill/CCBC Catonsville) picked up the loss going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Game Two:
The Retrievers and 49ers struggled to get anything going in the early part of the contest as both starting pitchers kept the other team's bats silenced. UMBC had a good chance in the fourth, getting a runner to third. Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) ripped a double down the left-field line and advanced on a wild pitch. However, he would be stranded on base as the game remained scoreless through six.
The 49ers would breakthrough in the sixth, getting a pair of runs and following that up with two more runs in the seventh to make it 4-0. They would hold the Retrievers from there, taking the series and game two by a score of 4-0.
Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.), Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Floyd would collect hits in the contest.
The Retrievers and 49ers will conclude their series tomorrow starting at noon.
