Box Score Charlotte, N.C.-- UMBC baseball dropped their season opener, 4-0 to Charlotte on Friday afternoon. The Retrievers could only muster five hits scattered throughout the contest. The 49ers held the Retrievers to just one hit over the first five innings in the win.
UMBC drops to 0-1 while the 49ers improve to 2-3 on the year.
Charlotte got things going in the second inning, getting a solo home run with one out in the inning. UMBC would threaten the next half inning with Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) getting a two-out single. O'Saben would steal a pair of bases to get 90 feet away, but a flyout ended the threat.
The 49ers would add another run in the sixth to make it 2-0. In the seventh, UMBC would get runners on the corners, but once again strand them on base. The Retrievers stranded a total of eight runners in the contest. Charlotte would add runs in the seventh and eighth, holding the Retrievers from the plate to win the series opener 4-0.
Five different Retrievers recorded hits on Friday. O'Saben, Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.), and Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) each had a single with Christan Torres (Miami, Fla.) hitting a triple and Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) hitting a double.
Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up the loss, hurling 5.0 innings and striking out four with just three hits given up.
The Retrievers and 49ers will play a double-header tomorrow starting at noon.
