Swimming and Diving Squads Produce Big Gains on Day Three of #AESD Championships

Worcester, Mass. – The UMBC men's swimming and diving squads began to distance themselves from their pursuers at the 2020 America East Championships after Saturday's penultimate day of competition.

The depth of the women's team paid dividends as well, as the Retrievers surged past Binghamton into second placed and sliced the deficit to first-place UNH nearly in half.

The men won five of the six swimming events on today's card and capped the evening by triumphing in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of seniors Garrett Wlochowski and Luis Galvan, sophomore Satori Dobbie and senior Ilia Rattsev posted a time of 3:15.54, less than a second slower than the 2019 Retriever quartet that set the championship record.

In the women's 400 medley relay, the UMBC foursome of sophomore Caroline Sargent, freshman Jenna Gwinn, and seniors Sotiria Neofytou and Hayley Committe produced an excellent swim, but came up shy of a record-setting UNH team.

Wlochowski, Dobbie and Rattsev added individual golds to their collection. Wlochowski captured the 100 backstroke in 48.59, Dobbie earned his first career gold in the 100 butterfly in 48.34, while Rattsev won the 200 freestyle for the third consecutive championship with a mark of 1:37.34.

Junior Kai Wisner defended his title in the 400 individual medley, touching the wall in 3:54.81. Sophomores Matt Bennici and Jimmy Dwyer earned silver and bronze.

The ladies produced a pair of silvers and bronzes in individual competition. Neofytou finished second in the 100 yard butterfly (55.52) and Sargent touched in second place in the 100 backstroke (56.02). Junior Natalija Marin took third in the 200 freestyle (1:52.12), while Gwinn placed third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.32).

The completion concludes on Sunday with five swimming events on each side and the finishing 400 yard freestyle relay.
