Jackson Buzzer-Beater Sends Game to Overtime; Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker, 86-73 to UMass Lowell

Box Score

Baltimore, Md. -- K.J. Jackson (Missouri City, Texas) hit a turnaround three-pointer as the regulation buzzer went off to send the game to overtime, but it was not enough as UMass Lowell pulled away in overtime, 86-73, to take the victory at the UMBC Event Center on Saturday afternoon.

UMBC dropped to 7-9, 0-1 AE, as UMass Lowell moved to 7-9, 1-0 AE.

Both teams started out sluggish to begin the game, with both teams having extended scoring droughts in the first half. The UMBC defense was able to hold the River Hawks to 28 percent shooting through the first half, including only two made three-pointers. The teams went into the locker rooms at halftime with the score in favor of the hosts, 29-23.

Things started off drastically different to begin the second half. After only hitting one shot in the first half, Brandon Horvath (West River, Md.) scored the first eight points for the Retrievers. Horvath's hot streak propelled UMBC to an eight-point lead three minutes into the half, making the score 37-29. The River Hawks didn't go down easy though, as Christian Lutete put together a string of seven consecutive points to cut the UMass Lowell deficit to one.

A Jackson jumper ended the running, giving the hosts a three-point advantage, 39-36, with just over 15 minutes left in the second half. The teams would trade baskets over the next five-plus minutes before UMass Lowell was able to take their first lead of the game since the 5:05 mark in the first half. UMass Lowell would extend their lead to as much as five points over the remaining time in the half, as UMBC continued to fight back and cut the deficit.

UMBC was able to tie the game at 60 apiece with 1:35 remaining on a Ricky Council II (Durham, NC) three-pointer after Jackson was able to grab a rebound and swing it out to him.

The River Hawks regained their lead; however, giving themselves a three-point lead with just over a second left off a pair of free throws. A full-court pass to Horvath from R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) set up a UMBC timeout with 0.6 seconds remaining. The UMBC Event Center erupted when after coming out of the timeout, Jackson took a low pass from the right-wing and made an incredible turnaround jumper to tie the game at 66 and send it into overtime.

In overtime though, UMBC couldn't keep up the hot River Hawks, as they took an 86-73 win on Saturday. Horvath finished with his third double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Council II added a career-high 15 points, and Jackson ended with 12 points and five assists.

UMBC returns to action Wednesday, January 8, as they travel to take on Binghamton. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
