Box Score Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC men's basketball won their second in a row, 63-53 against Maine on Saturday afternoon. Senior K.J. Jackson (Missouri City, Texas) led a quartet in double figures with 16 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists in the win.
The Retrievers improve to 9-12, 2-4 AE while the Black Bears fall to 6-15, 2-5 AE.
Jackson led the way with 16 points adding seven rebounds and seven assists in the win. L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) added 15 points with Brandon Horvath (West River, Md./Southern) chipping in 11 points and six rebounds and R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) scoring 10 points with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Andrew Flemming was the lone Black Bear in double figures with 18 points.
After trailing at halftime, the Retrievers opened the second half on a 5-0 run to retake the lead. That lead would be extended after Owens nailed a three from the wing. However, Maine would close the gap and the Black Bears and Retrievers exchanged turns with the lead before UMBC took the lead for good late.
Eytle-Rock and Horvath drilled back-to-back three's to up the lead and sparking a 13-2 run over a four-minute stretch that increased the lead to nine. Maine would make a run late, but a three from Owens salted the game away for the Retrievers, 63-53.
UMBC shot just 38 percent from the floor, but made 12 three's in the game and went 15-19 from the foul line. The Retrievers held Maine to just 32 percent from the floor and outscored the Black Bears 15-11 on second-chance points.
The Retrievers jumped on the Black Bears early, getting out in front thanks to an early 9-0 run. L.J. Owens led the charge with a big and one and three-pointer. Maine closed the gap to just two, but a pair of three's from Ricky Council II (Durham, N.C.) and Brandon Horvath kept the Retrievers ahead midway through.
After the Retrievers held the Black Bears scoreless over a three-minute stretch, Maine rattled off a 10-0 run over the last three minutes of the half to take a 31-28 lead at the break.
Owens and Jackson led the way in the first half with nine points each. Jackson added five rebounds as UMBC shot just 32 percent from the floor with eight-second chance points.
