BALTIMORE -  Visiting Incarnate Word scored twice in a span of 32 seconds early in the second half and held off a furious UMBC rally to defeat the Retrievers, 2-1, in the opening game for both teams.

A Retriever Soccer Park crowd of 2,208 turned out for the opener.

Junior transfer Sammy Dupuy (Santiago, Chile/Longwood) got the Retrievers to within 2-1 in the 70th minute and UMBC pressed throughout the final 20 minutes but could not get the equalizer.

UMBC outshot UIW, 13-9, and sent nine shots toward goal in the second half.

The Retrievers' best chance came with 1:40 remaining, as freshman midfielder Dadi Ingason (Hafnarfjodur, Iceland) re-directed a free kick from inside the box, but Cardinal goalkeeper Carlos Mercado was perfectly positioned and made the save.

After a scoreless first half, UIW's Darius Feldman struck on a goalmouth scramble in the 54th minute. Shortly after the ensuing kick-off, the Retrievers turned the ball over and Feldman broke in again. His shot from the right side was saved by UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood), but Cardinal Miguel Velasquez deposited the rebound into an unguarded net.

Dupuy cut the deficit in half, heading in a Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) free kick from 12 yards out.

The setback stopped a streak of 13 straight openers without a loss for UMBC. The last loss occurred to Georgia Southern in 2005.

Mercado made four saves for the visitors, while Jones stopped a pair for UMBC.

The Retrievers continue the season-opening five-game homestand on Sunday when they host Hofstra at 7:00 p.m.
