BALTIMORE – Senior midfielderJosh Jordan (Lunenburg, Mass.) and junior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored career-topping five goals apiece as UMBC tallied a decade-best 19 goals, defeating Lafayette, 19-8, in pristine conditions at UMBC Stadium.

Freshman face-off specialist Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) won 20 of 23 face-offs and collected 16 ground balls to help the hosts dominate time of possession.

Galloway and classmates Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) and Colin Hoff (Central Valley, Pa.) all scored their first career goals in the victory as the Retrievers (2-6) snapped a four-game slide.

The 19 goals scored was the most for a Retriever squad since they netted 20 goals versus Vermont in 2007.

Two Retrievers have not produced five or more goals in the same game since Drew Westervelt (6) and Brendan Mundorf (5) achieved those marks in the May 2006 America East championship game victory (19-10) over UAlbany.

UMBC jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 5:56 into the game, but Lafayette registered the final three goals on the first stanza to knot the score at 3-all after 15 minutes. The Leopards took a 5-4 lead at the 4:38 mark of  the second quarter on a tally by attackman Conor Walters, but the Retrievers would close the period with five consecutive goals and extended the run to 8-0 by the 5-minute mark of the third quarter.

Frawley and Jordan each scored two goals in the 5-0 surge which put the Retrievers ahead, 9-5, at intermission.

Lafayette broke a 16-minute scoring drought at the 5:46 mark of the third period and trailed, 14-7, in the final minute of the quarter. But UMBC junior attackman Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and sophomore midfielder Michael Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) both tallied in the final 49 seconds of the quarter to give the Retrievers a 16-7 lead after 45 minutes.

McIntyre recorded his fourth hat trick of the season and Zichelli tallied twice, including a 70-yard effort against a 10-man ride midway through the third period.

Sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) recorded a career-best four assists and shared five-point efforts with Jordan and Frawley. Senior midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and freshman attackman Jack Thomas ((Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) contributed three and two helpers respectively.

UMBC outshot LC, 47-23, earned 36 of 56 ground balls and won 25 of 30 face-offs.   

The Retrievers return to America East action next Saturday, April 5, when they entertain Binghamton at noon.
