Retrievers Fall to Miami, 8-2 on Friday Night

Box Score

Coral Gables, Fla.-- UMBC baseball dropped the series opener against Miami, 8-2 on Friday night. The Retrievers did all their damage in the first two innings, scoring a run in each inning. UMBC mustered just three hits, with Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) and Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) driving in runs.

The Retrievers fall to 2-2 on the year, while the Hurricanes improve to 7-2.

UMBC got things going early, putting a run across in the first. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) led off the inning with an infield single and advanced on an error. He would move up to third on a ground out and score after Christian Torres reached on an error to give UMBC an early 1-0 lead.

However, the Hurricanes would respond, pushing four across in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 4-1.

The Retrievers capitalized on another Hurricane error in the second, with Terrence Pinkston driving in Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) with an RBI single with two outs to cut the deficit to 4-2.

After Miami put up a pair of runs in the third, both teams settled in and found their groove on the mound. UMBC starter Frank Fraschetti (New Castle, Pa.) held the Canes to just a couple of hits over the next two innings. Hurricane starter Evan McKendry kept the Retrievers off the board over the next four innings to take a 6-2 lead.

Miami would add one more in the seventh and eighth and hold the Retrievers in the ninth to take game one 8-2 on Friday night.

Torres and Pinkston each had a hit and an RBI, with Blaze O'Saben getting the only other Retriever hit on Friday night.

Game two of the series will be tomorrow, Saturday March 2 at 7 p.m. Fans can catch the action on ACC Network Extra.
