TWICE AS NICE: Men and Women Capture 2019 #AESD Championships Titles

WORCESTER, Mass. - The UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams both took home the America East swimming and diving championships, the first time that both teams have won titles since the 2010-11 season. The men defended their crown with 1113.5 points, the most ever by a team, while the women reclaimed the crown with 894.5 points.

RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCES

Senior Hania Moro broke the school record in the 1650 free and earned gold after touching in with a time of 16:39.98.

In the preliminaries of the 200 back, senior Alexander Gliese set the UMBC and America East record as he touched in with a time of 1:42.56. Gliese earned gold in the event with a time of 1:44.56

DAY FOUR RECAP

Sophomore Vanessa Esposito earned silver in the 1650 free, touching in with a time of 17:06.01.

On the men's side, Kai Wisner (15:35.20), Haythem Abdelkhalek (15:45.05), and Matt Bennici (15:48.93) finished 1-2-3.

Freshman Caroline Sargent earned a silver medal in the 200 back after touching in with a time of 2:01.48, while senior Kelly Lajoie earned bronze after touching in with a time of 2:01.91. Emily Vance (4th, 2:02.98), Aleasha Knight (6th, 2:04.92), and Natalie Davis (8th, 2:05.17) rounded out the top 8.

Garrett Wlochowski earned silver in the 200 back with a time of 1:46.50, while Luka Zuric earned bronze in a time of 1:47.44. Ryan Bugianesi finished fifth with a time fo 1:51.64.

Haylee Committe earned silver in the 100 free after touching in with a time of 51.17, followed by Tonia Papapertroua in third with a time of 51.40. Laura Massicotte (5th, 51.73) and Maddy Popalis (7th, 51.94) rounded out the top eight.

Ilia Rattsev took home another gold, this time in the 100 free as he touched in with a time of 44.28, while Tiago Asakawa earned bronze in a time of 45.70. Ross Welsh rounded out the top eight with a time 46.63.

Holly Driscoll earned bronze in the 200 breast, touching in with a time of 2:18.73.

On the men's side, Luis Galvan earned gold in a time of 2:00.16, while Connor Ganley took home silver in a time of 2:01.30. Jimmy Dwyer rounded out with top eight with a time of 2:07.39.

Natalija Marin took home a silver medal in women's 200 fly in a time of 2:01.77. Britt Driscoll (4th, 2:04.31) and Sotiria Neofytou (7th, 2:07.49) rounded out the top eight.

On the men's side, Jack Carlisle earned a gold medal with a time of 1:49.80, while Mac Hoskins earned a silver (1:49.86) and Satori Dobbie earned bronze (1:50.39). Bugianesi finished fifth with a time of 1:52.56.

In the 400 free relay, Committe, Popalis, Papapetrou, Massicotte finished first with a time of 3:24.17

Rattsev, Gliese, Asakawa, and Ganley closed out the championships with a victory in the men's 400 free relay, touching in with a time of 2:59.94.

AWARDS ALL AROUND

Moro was awarded the women's Dave Alexander Coaches' Award, given to the senior who accrues the most points over the course of the meet.

Gliese earned Most Outstanding Swimmer, after breaking the America East record in the 100 and 200 back, as well as the men's Dave Alexander Coaches' Award.

Bennici and Zuric earned Co-Outstanding Rookies of the Meet; Bennici earned bronze in the 500 and 1650 free while taking silver in the 100 fly, while Zuric earned silver in the 200 free and bronze in the 100 and 200 back.

After earning gold in the 3- and 1-meter dives, senior Elijah Wright was named Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet.

Chad Cradock and his coaching staff earned both men and women's coaching staff of the year honors.

For the second year in the row, Connor Ganley earned the Elite 18 award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the championship site. Ganley holds a 3.97 GPA as a chemical engineering major.
