WORCESTER, Mass. – The UMBC swimming and diving programs got off to a strong showing on day one of the 2019 America East Championships on Thursday, Feb. 14 at WPI. The men lead with 130 points while the women sit in second place with 105 points.
The team of Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Tiago Asakawa, and Ilia Rattsev earned gold in the 200 medley relay, where they set a new WPI, America East, and UMBC record with a time of 1:27.41; last year, the Retrievers set a school and conference record with a time of 1:28.61.
DAY ONE RECAP
-Laura Massicotte, Natalija Marin, Kelly Lajoie, and Hania Moro won the first gold of the day after taking first in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:18.62.
-Connor Ganley, Luka Zuric, Garrett Wlochowski, and Satori Dobbie followed up with a first-place finish in the 800 free relay, touching in with a time of 6:38.86.
-In the men's 1-meter dive, Elijah Wright earned gold with a score of 281.90 and Leo Bouye took home bronze with a score of 258.15.
-The ladies took home gold in 200 medley relay as Emily Vance, Maddy Popalis, Sotiria Neofytou, and Haylee Committe touched in with a time of 1:41.25.
UP NEXT
The Retrievers will return to the pool tomorrow as they compete in day two of the America East Championships. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m., while the finals will take place at 6 p.m. The team will compete in 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 200 free relay, as well as the men's 3-meter dive.
