Retrievers Bury Twelve Treys, Win Fourth Straight On the Road, 64-50, at Binghamton

Box Score

Vestal, N.Y. – Graduate student forward Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) led four Retrievers in double figures with 16 points and UMBC converted a team America East season-high 12 treys in a 64-50 victory at Binghamton.

UMBC has won seven of their last eight games and four straight on the road as they improved to 16-10 overall and 8-3 in America East play. Binghamton slid to 7-19, 3-8.

The Retrievers knocked down 7-of-11 from long range against the Bearcat zone in the second half and shot 50 percent (12 of 24) for the game.

UMBC freshman guard R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) scored 11 of his season high 13 points in the second half.

Binghamton freshman guard Sam Sessoms, who led all scorers with 23 points, tied the score at 38-all on a driving layup with 13:27 remaining. But UMBC junior guard K.J. Jackson (Houston, Texas) knocked down a trey on the next possession and the Retrievers would never trail again.

Eytle-Rock and Sherburne hit back-to-back treys to increase UMBC's lead from 47-45 to 53-45 at the 5:45 mark. After the Beacats knocked down two free throws, the Retrievers scored the next 7 points, highlighted by a Sherburne trey to put the visitors ahead, 60-47, with 2:00 left.

Jackson and junior forward Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn.) also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Sherburne added a team-high 8 rebounds, while Jackson contributed 5 assists and 3 steals. Junior guard Ricky Council II (Durham, N.C.) hit all three shots from behind the arc and finished with 9 points.

UMBC held Binghamton to just 38 percent shooting (19-of-50), while hitting 12-of-23 shots in the second half and finishing at 45.3 percent (24-of-53) for the game.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half. The Retrievers made an early run of 8-0 to lead 15-10 at the 12-minute mark, but the Bearcats' J.C. Show buried four first-half treys to help the hosts recapture the lead. But UMBC closed the half on a 7-0 surge to erase a 24-22 deficit and forge ahead, 29-24 at the break.

UMBC opens a two-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they host the UMass Lowell River Hawks. #RetrieverNation will celebrate Alumni Day and honor two special anniversaries that afternoon, as the 1978-79 and 1998-99 squads will be recognized. The former squad reached the NCAA DII quarter-finals and finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation, while the younger group won the Northeast Conference regular season title.
