Campbell Homers; Hartford Completes Sweep of UMBC on Sunday, 5-1

Box Score

West Hartford, Conn.— UMBC baseball dropped the series finale on Sunday, 5-1 to first place Hartford in America East action. Senior Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) provided the Retrievers with their lone run, blasting a solo home run in the eighth.

The Retrievers fall to 18-23, 9-9 AE on the year while Hartford moves to 19-26, 13-5 AE.

UMBC came out in the first inning with a pair of hits by AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.), but both were stranded on base to end the inning.

Hartford would race out to a 5-0 lead, scoring one run in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Retrievers broke through in the eighth, getting a run off a Matt Campbell solo home run. The solo shot was his second of the year and second home run in as many days to cut the deficit to 5-1.

However, that would be all UMBC would get as the Hartford pitching staff held the Retrievers to just six hits in a 5-1 win.

Six different Retrievers recorded hits in the contest, with Campbell recording the only run, RBI and extra base hit.

UMBC will return home to take on Delaware on Tuesday, May 8. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
