Campbell Provides Late Heroics; UMBC Baseball Knocks Off Delaware 8-7 on Wednesday

Box Score

Newark, Del.—Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) smacked a two-out two-RBI triple in the eighth to give UMBC the lead for good in an 8-7 victory against Delaware on Wednesday. The Retrievers had 12 hits on the day, including a three-run home run by Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) in the first.

UMBC wins their fifth straight to move to 18-20 on the year while Delaware falls to 23-21.

The Retrievers got things going early with three runs in the first. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) got things going with a single to left center and advanced on a failed pickoff. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) followed up with a single. Beeman came up two batters later and blasted a three-run home run to left to put UMBC in front 3-0 early.

UMBC added to their total in the second, as Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.) scored off a bad throw to second on an attempted AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) steal to make it 4-0.

Delaware responded with five straight in the second and third to retake the lead heading to the fourth. With two away and two on in the inning, Bright reached on an error to bring home Wright and Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) to put UMBC back in front 6-5.

Both sides continued to exchange the lead, as the Blue Hens put up runs in the sixth and seventh to go back in front 7-6.

UMBC would strike again in the eighth with two outs. DeThomasis singled to left and was followed up by Finn who reached on an error setting up Matt Campbell. Campbell ripped a triple to right center scoring both DeThomasis and Finn to give UMBC an 8-7 advantage.

Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) came on and pitched two perfect innings to seal the win, picking up his ninth save of the year. Greg Albert (Medford, N.J.) earned his first career win going 0.2 innings of relief, giving up just one hit.

Bright, Torres, Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Campbell each had two hits, with Beeman leading the way with three RBI. Both of the hits by Campbell were triples.

UMBC continues their road swing at Hartford this weekend. The matchup features the top two teams in the America East, with the Hawks leading the Retrievers by a game. The two will play a double header on Saturday starting at noon with the series finale on Sunday also at noon.
