Retriever Baseball Splits Double Header with Binghamton on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Vestal, N.Y.— UMBC baseball dropped the opener 3-2 as the Bearcats came back from down 2-1 for the win before the Retrievers earned a decisive 8-4 victory in the finale. UMBC used a six run first inning in game two to cruise to victory.

UMBC moves to 21-25, 11-10 AE on the year with Binghamton falling to 17-29-1, 9-15 AE.

Game One:

The Bearcats got things going early, putting up a run in their half of the first. The Retrievers responded in the third, tying the game on a sacrifice fly. Senior Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored just pitches later a Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va.) sac fly to center to tie it.

Binghamton threatened in the fifth, getting runners to second and third with no outs. However, UMBC starter Chase Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) got three straight outs, capped with a strikeout to keep the game tied.

UMBC took the lead in the sixth getting a leadoff double by Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.), scoring on a double by freshman Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) to make it 2-1.

However, the Bearcats would score in their half of the sixth to tie it and walk it off in the ninth on a bases loaded single to take game on 3-2.

Bright was the lone Retriever with multiple hits, going 3-4 from the plate.

Game Two:

The Retriever came out of the gates early, putting up six runs in the first inning. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led off the inning with a single and advanced on a Bright walk. Just pitches later, Wright would score on a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) double to left. Goodwin followed up with a sacrifice fly to score Bright. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) added to the tally with a single of his own to plate Torres to make it 3-0.

That lead would extend to 4-0 on a Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.) sacrifice ground out. Carroll added the final blow in the inning with a two-run single that scored Campbell and Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.), giving UMBC a 6-0 lead.

Beeman added to the lead in the fourth with his second RBI of the day on a single that scored Torres to push UMBC in front 7-0.

Binghamton answered with runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 7-2. However the Retrievers added some insurance in the seventh on a Floyd RBI single that scored Beeman to put UMBC in front 8-2.

The Bearcats would try and comeback in the seventh with a pair of runs, but UMBC quelled the rally to hold on for an 8-4 victory.

Starter Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) went 3.2 innings, giving up just one run and four hits to earn the victory.

Beeman led the way with three hits and two RBI in the win.

UMBC will travel to Georgetown on Tuesday to close out non-conference play before hosting Albany next weekend, looking to lock down a spot in the America East Tournament.
