UMBC Baseball Uses Hot Hitting to Defeat Towson, 13-0 in a Rain Shortened Game on Wednesday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball took care of their cross-town rivals behind 13 hits, scoring 12 of their 13 runs in the third inning. The Retriever pitching staff surrendered just five hits in the win.

UMBC moves to 14-20 on the year while the Tigers fall to 12-28.

Matt Shatto (Lancaster, Pa.) led off the third with a walk, and advanced on a Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) single. Shatto would score on a Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) single. Campbell would score the next at bat off a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) sacrifice fly. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) added to the tally with a single up the middle scoring Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.).

Beeman came back to the plate and ripped a single of his own scoring Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.) who both walked. Torres would help the cause by getting hit by the second pitch he saw allowing Shatto to score his second run of the inning. Goodwin doubled home Bright and Beeman and Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) capped the run with a single up the middle to score Torres.

In all, UMBC had seven hits, against three different Towson pitchers.

The Retrievers added another run in the seventh on a Torres RBI double that scored Bright who led off the inning with a single.

UMBC would hold the Tigers to just five hits, with only one runner advancing to third. The game would be called in the eighth inning after heavy rain hit the area.

Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) picked up his third win in two innings of relief. UMBC struck out seven batters in the contest. Stewart and Goodwin led the way with three hits each, with Goodwin driving in three runs and Stewart belting a pair of doubles.

UMBC will be back in action this weekend against Maine in America East play. The Black Bears and Retrievers will play a double header on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a single game on Sunday at noon.
