Bright Leads UMBC Baseball Past Coppin State, 7-2 on Wednesday Night

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—Senior Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) led the Retrievers with three RBI in a 7-2 win against the Eagles that snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday. The Retrievers jumped on the Eagles early, putting up four runs in the second to go ahead for good.

UMBC improves to 11-19 on the year while Coppin State falls to 13-17-1.

After neither team could get anything going in the first, the Eagles took an early lead with a run in the top of the second.

UMBC answered in their half of the inning with four runs. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) led off the inning reaching on a hit by pitch and would advance to third on a stolen base and ground out. He would later score after a stolen base by Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) forced an errant throw allowing Beeman to score. Finn would score just pitches later thanks to a Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) single to center. Both Campbell and AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored on a Bright double to left center to make it 4-1.

The Eagles would cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth, but the Retriever responded with a three spot in the sixth to put away Coppin State for good.

Finn led off the inning with a walk and would steal second and move up on a Wright base hit. He crossed home just pitches later on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. Wright would score after Bright ripped a triple to right center, scoring on a throwing error to make it 7-2 UMBC.

The Retrievers got solid pitching from Greg Albert (Medford, N.J.) who came on in relief. Albert threw four innigs of scoreless ball, giving up just two hits with four strikeouts in the win.

Bright and Wright each had two hits to lead UMBC, with Bright driving in three runs. Both of Wright's hits went for doubles, with Bright ripping a triple. Chase Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) picked up the win in relief.

UMBC will travel to Long Island for a key America East series this weekend.
