UMBC Baseball Drops Midweek Contest to George Mason, 11-4

Fairfax, Va.—UMBC baseball dropped their fourth in a row in an 11-4 defeat to George Mason on Wednesday afternoon. The Retrievers were led by Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) with a pair of hits and two RBI in the loss.

UMBC falls to 5-14 on the year, while George Mason moves to 11-12.

Cameron Taylor (Leesburg, Va.) picked up the loss to go to 0-2 on the year with James Price picking up the win.

The Patriots got things going with a pair of runs in the first, adding another in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.

UMBC got on the board in the fourth. Senior Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Zack Bright ripped a double to right center, plating Campbell to cut the deficit to 3-1.

George Mason would respond putting up two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. They would go on an score another five runs to take an 11-1 lead before the Retriever bats came alive.

Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y.) led off the eighth with an infield single. He would move up on a Campbell single before getting to third on a Chris Convers (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) single to load the bases. Bright would single home DeThomasis the very next at bat. Campbell would score just pitches later on a wild pitch to make it 11-3. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) continued the streak with a double to left center, scoring Convers to make it 11-4 after eight.

However, the Retrievers went down in order in the ninth, as George Mason held on for an 11-4 win.

Bright led the Retrievers with two hits and two RBI. Campbell also added a pair of hits in the loss.

UMBC return to action on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31 against Binghamton. Friday's double header starts Friday at noon with the series finale on Saturday at noon.
