Retrievers and Quakers Battle to 0-0 Draw on Tuesday Night

Philadelphia, Pa.-- UMBC men's soccer had some good chances on the night, but could not break through in a scoreless draw with Penn. The Retrievers out-shot the Quakers, but only mustered four shots on goal.

How We Got Here:

  • UMBC had a good chance early on, as the Retrievers played a ball through the box, but Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) could not get a foot on the pass.

  • Penn threatened just minutes later with a diving header, but the Retriever defense blocked the attempt before it could reach Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood)

  • Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) had a chance late in the half, but his strike went just over the crossbar as the teams went into the break tied 0-0.

  • The Quakers had the first good chance of the second half off a corner kick, but the shot went just past the post in the 61st minute.

  • Jackson Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) had a pair of chances in the 74th minute after the ball pinballed in front, but his shots were blocked.

  • Penn nearly took the lead late, but the shot clanged off the crossbar, as the two sides headed to extra time.

  • Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) sent a ball to Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) in the 93rd minute, but his shot sailed high.

  • Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) had a chance stopped in the 105th minute, and the rebound by James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) and a rebound in front that was stymied to keep it scoreless.

By The Numbers:

  • The Retrievers outshot the Quakers 15-11 in the contest, including 4-1 in shots on goal.

  • UMBC earned four corner kicks, surrendering just three to Penn.

  • Marconi led the Retrievers with four shots, with Bailey and Becher each with three.

In Net:

  • Quantrell Jones earned his second clean sheet of the year in his third start. Jones made just one save on the only Penn shot to reach the net.

  • Jones remains undefeated on the year at 2-0-1 while Scott Forbes moves to 2-3-4 on the year.
