Championship Season Comes to End for Baseball; UMBC Eliminated from Regionals

Box Score

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The UMBC baseball team's championship season came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as they were eliminated by Maryland (38-22) from the Winston-Salem Regional after dropping the game, 16-2, at David F. Couch Ballpark.

The Retrievers (23-25) got on the board first, with Zach Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) taking the first pitch of the bottom of the second 359 feet to left field to give UMBC a 1-0 lead and extend his hit streak to nine games.

Maryland would respond back immediately, piling on 16 unanswered runs, aided by four homers, over the next six innings. UMBC would stop the onslaught with an AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) solo shot in the eighth inning to make the score, 16-2. That would be all they would get back, as the game would end with that score.

Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) lead the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double.

Fourth-seeded UMBC was selected as the home team for the elimination game by winning a coin toss against number three Maryland.

The Retrievers' America East championship was their first ever in program history. This year's NCAA appearance marks their third ever appearance in the tournament in 30 years competing in Division I, and their first in 16 years.
