UMBC Baseball Splits Sunday Double Header with Maine

Orono, Maine – UMBC baseball split their double header with the Black Bears on Sunday, falling 10-7 in game one before coming back to take game two 9-6. The Retrievers remain in second place after the split on Sunday. 

The Retrievers improve to 18-19, 10-7 AE while the Black Bears move to 17-24, 4-10 AE. 

Game One: 

The Retrievers got on the board early with a run in the first after Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) drove in AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) who doubled earlier in the inning.

UMBC would add to that lead the next inning as Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) singled in Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset). Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) followed up with a single that plated Carroll to make it 3-0 UMBC. Carroll would add a run on a sac fly in the fourth to make it 4-0 before Maine got on the board. 

The Black Bears would score three in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3 before Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) blasted his sixth home run of the year. It would be 6-3 in the sixth when Maine added a run, and then put up four in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. They added two in the eighth to take game one 10-7.

Game Two: 

Maine broke through first, grabbing a run in the first. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) smashed his first career home run in the second, giving the Retrievers a 2-1 lead. Carroll struck just batters later with an RBI single to give UMBC a 3-1 lead.

The Black Bears once again rallied back, putting up four runs in the fourth to grab a 5-3 lead. However the Retrievers would not surrender, putting up five runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. 

Wright doubled in Carroll and Beeman, followed by Switalski doubling home Wright to make it 6-5. Dolshun doubled in Switalski just pitches later, while Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) added the final blow with a single of his own to make it 8-5. The Retrievers would add to their lead on a Casali RBI triple in the seventh.

Maine would score in their half of the inning, but Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) shut the door for his fifth win of the year. He went 3.2 innings of relief giving up just one hit.

Wright and Torres led the way with two RBI each, as Casali was the lone Retriever with multiple hits in the game.

UMBC concludes their ten game road trip with games at Maryland on Tuesday, May 9 and Towson on Wednesday, May 10 before hosting Coppin State on Thursday, May 11 at Alunmi Field.
