UMBC Baseball Splits Double Header with Binghamton on Sunday

Vestal, N.Y.—UMBC baseball won game one before falling in game two of a double header against Binghamton on Sunday. Senior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) led the offense with seven hits between the two games.

UMBC moves to 9-13, 3-3 AE on the year, while Binghamton improves to 12-6, 3-2 AE.

Casali went 4-4 in game two, while going 3-6 in game one, scoring three total runs.

Game One:

The Retrievers got on the board first in the second inning after Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) led off the inning with a double. He would advance to third on a wild pitch and later score on a Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) single to right.

Binghamton would take the lead in the bottom half of the inning, before the Retriever bats came to life. UMBC got another run in the fourth off a Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) fielder's choice moved Stewart to third. He would score on an error to tie it at 2-2.

UMBC then put up three runs the very next inning off RBI singles from Switalski and Stewart. Switalski would score later in the inning on a double steal to make it 5-2.

After the Bearcats put up a run in the fifth, the Retrievers put up four in the sixth to take control with RBI singles from Casali, Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Stewart, as well as an RBI double from Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset). UMBC tacked on three more in the eighth to seal a 12-3 victory in game one.

Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) went 4.2 innings to earn his third win of the year, giving up just three earned runs.

Game Two:

The Retrievers picked up where they left off with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Dolshun doubled home Casali, followed by a Switalski singled home Dolshun to make it 2-0 UMBC.

However, Binghamton would put up seven runs in the fourth to push ahead 7-2, putting up 11 unanswered runs to take game two 11-2.

UMBC put up just seven hits, with four of them coming from Casali who went 4-4 from the plate with a pair of doubles.

The Retrievers are back in action with a mid-week matchup with George Washington on Tuesday, April 11 in Arlington, Va. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
