Chanin's Complete Game and Steady Offense Leads UMBC Baseball to Split of Doubleheader Against UMass Lowell on Friday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md. – Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) pitched a complete game three-hitter and reigning America East Rookie of the Week Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) had four hits throughout the day as UMBC (12-17, 6-5 America East) split the doubleheader against UMass Lowell (20-15, 8-5 AE) on Friday afternoon.

UMass Lowell took game one, 6-2, while UMBC took the second game, 5-2.

Game One:

UMass Lowell got on the board first in the second after a leadoff home run and an error allowed another run to score to go up 2-0. UMBC would tie the game back up in their half of the second off a triple from Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset). Torres and Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro), who got on by an error, would come and score to make it 2-2.

UMass Lowell put up four straight unanswered runs to go up, 6-2 to take control of the contest.

Two of Toress' four hits came in the first game, as him and Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) would lead the offense as they both went 2-for-4 in the game.

Game Two:

The River Hawks would get out to an early lead again, scoring off a RBI groundout. Back-to-back doubles by Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Torres would put the Retrievers up top, 2-1 after the first. A run wouldn't be scored until the fourth, when UMass Lowell would hit their fourth home run of the day. UMBC would answer back in the bottom of the sixth, when Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) would squeeze a run home. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) would double Casali and Zach DeThomasis (Rennsalaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) home to make the score 5-2, which would be how the game ended.

Chanin would throw the pitching staff's first complete game of the season, going seven strong innings and giving up only two runs on three hits, four strikeouts, and only one walk. He moves to 2-4 on the season as he lowers his ERA to 4.74. Wright, Switalski, and Torres all had multi-hit games.

UMBC and UMass Lowell finish their series tomorrow, Saturday, April 22 with a 2:00 pm first pitch at Alumni Field.
