Coppin State Defeats UMBC, 10-4 on Wednesday Night

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball surrendered just five hits on the night, but fell 10-4 to Coppin State on Wednesday. The Retrievers battled back to make it 5-2, but the Eagles put up five runs over the last four innings to earn the victory.

UMBC falls to 9-15 on the year while Coppin State improves to 7-20.

Junior Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) led the offense with three hits, while Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) recorded two hits, including a big solo home run in the ninth.

Coppin State took an early 1-0 lead after a run in the first inning, and increased that lead to 2-0 after another run in the third.

The Retrievers struck back with a run in the fourth to cut the lead in half. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) led off the inning with a walk and would move to second on a stolen base. He would score after Stewart singled through the left side to make it 2-1.

After Coppin State put up three runs in the fifth, Stack led off the inning with a single, and Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) doubled to left the very next pitch. Beeman would score just two pitches later off a Kyle Benjamin (Mechanicsville, Md./Bishop McNamara) double.

The Eagles distanced themselves, scoring three runs in the sixth and ninth innings to take a 10-2 lead.

However the Retrievers would not go quietly, getting back-to-back solo home runs from Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Stewart to cut the deficit, but the Eagles held on for the win.

UMBC returns to the field this weekend with a three game America East set against Hartford on Friday and Saturday April 14-15. The Hawks and Retrievers will play two on Friday and a single game on Saturday, both starting at noon.
